Black Mountain 2011 Recap: Saturn Rising!
Wednesday, May 11th, 2011Well, it’s taken me a full week to pull myself together to write this, but another Black Mountain Retreat is history. With Saturn blazing overhead, the first night we knew we were in for something special, and we were right! Before the bruises and my poor old memory fade any further, I figure now would be a good time to hit some of the highlights of one of our best retreats yet…

Ba Gua Training Tips #4: Change!
Sunday, January 3rd, 2010Well, it’s been a long time since I was able and motivated to do one of these posts. Newborn babies and all the other vagaries of life have kept me, shall we say, distracted. But, things are starting to settle in around here, and as I’m going to be undertaking a much larger writing project in the new year I suppose I should get back in the practice of actually doing some. So, without further ado, #4 in our series of basic Ba Gua concepts:
Change!
CPL Ba Gua Intro Workshop in Athens This Weekend!
Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009CPL Bagua workshop @ Roots Farm this Saturday, April 25, 3-5pm. Intro level, all welcome.
This came together at the last minute so I’m getting the word out a little late. If you are in the Athens area and have been wanting to try out some Ba Gua, now is your chance! We will be looking at the first four changes in the Chen Pan Ling Condensed Ba Gua System. Most of the time will be spent on introduction to the forms and proper circling, but we will also touch on basic application of the forms. These forms are very adaptable to different ability levels and are comparatively easy to learn, so no one should fear that the material will go over their heads. Conversely, the accomplished martial artist can use these forms to quickly integrate Ba Gua methods and strategies into their existing practice.
Sorry again for the late notice, and I hope to see some new faces as well as old friends there!

Ba Gua Training Tips #2: Walk the Walk
Sunday, January 18th, 2009What’s up with the way these Ba Gua guys walk around in circles all the time? As our Xing Yi instructor likes to say, “those guys look like they know what they’re doing, they just don’t have any idea where they’re going.” Well, as usual, he’s half right
. Ba Gua walking is a little strange at first, but don’t worry. There is a rhyme and a reason to it all. Read on… (more…)

Ba Gua Training Tips #1: Conditioning
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008Now that we have this wonderful forum to use, I feel obliged to make the most of it. One thing I intend to do regularly is post on subjects directly related to the Gao Ba Gua we teach here at PATHS. I will try to focus on areas that are generally pertinent to any student at any level, or to address frequently asked questions (FAQ). So, for this first post in the “Training Tips” category, allow me to digress for a moment on the subject of Basic Conditioning:
So, who would win in a fight, you or ….?
Tuesday, December 30th, 2008A fellow instructor of mine started receiving calls from a prospective student not too long ago. The caller would ask lots of technical and “If I did this… what would you do?” type questions. Said instructor answered these queries as best he could for a while, but at the end always admonished the caller to come out and try for themselves. This exchange built up over a couple of weeks to this question: “So, could you beat up Chuck Liddell?” My friend, fed up with this and without a moments pause, said simply “Hell No!” The response was, “Then why should I waste my time studying with you?”
